Volvo is to unveil technology that it says will help prevent collisions with pedestrians at speeds of up to 20mph, and reduce the severity of accidents at higher speeds.
In the new system, radar and camera sensors will work in tandem to determine the proximity and nature of objects near the car.
If they distinguish a pedestrian moving into the path of the vehicle, a warning will be flashed to the driver. Should the driver fail to respond, the car will apply full automatic braking.
"The previous stages were developed to help the driver avoid collisions with other vehicles," said Volvo's Thomas Broberg. "Now we are taking a giant step forward with a feature that also boosts safety for unprotected road-users."
"This technology helps us take an important step towards our long-term vision of designing cars that should not crash. Our aim for 2020 is that no one should be killed or injured in a Volvo car."
The radar-based system will also allow cars to drive themselves amongst queuing traffic, extending Volvo's Adaptive Cruise Control to low-speed motoring.
The features, to be demonstrated at the Detroit Motor Show in early January, are due to be rolled out with the new Volvo S60 in 2010.
