Drivers from the UK who are disqualified from driving in Ireland will also be disqualified in the UK, under legislation scheduled for next spring.
And under the rules, Irish drivers who are disqualified in the UK will have their punishment extended to Irish roads.
"Britain has one of the best road safety records in the world but we need to do everything we can to improve even further," said Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
"These measures will keep dangerous drivers off our roads by ensuring that disqualified drivers are not able to escape their punishment."
The UK Government believes that the legislation is the first example of European states cooperating over disqualified drivers.
In 1998, the EU member states agreed a framework under which the penalties for driving offences such as speeding and reckless or dangerous driving would be recognised between states. However, this is yet to be ratified by all member states.
