Young drivers should not be allowed to drink any alcohol before getting behind the wheel, the Government's advisors on drugs are to recommend.
The proposals, reported by The Telegraph, come from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), which is due to submit a report to the Home Office in February.
The paper quotes council member Caroline Healy, who spoke at an open meeting in London on Tuesday: "We feel that young people under the age of 21 should have a zero rate for alcohol if they are driving.
"By their nature, they are inexperienced drivers and not able to tolerate alcohol, and the combination of the two is dangerous."
But commenting on the ACMD proposals, a spokesperson from the Institute of Advanced Motorists told Admiral News: "Our practical advice is that no one should drink if they are going to drive, regardless of their age."
A spokesperson from the Department of Health added: "We are prepared to take action that is clearly shown to be necessary and proportionate, and will announce results of the alcohol consultation in due course."
