The number of people killed on Scotland's roads has fallen to its lowest since records began.
Figures released yesterday by the Scottish government reveal that 281 people lost their lives on the country's roads last year, a drop of 11% on 2006. Serious injuries also fell by 11%, with 2,375 casualties in 2007.
The number of fatalities has fallen by 25% since 1997, when 377 people were killed. Traffic volume increased by 16% over the same period.
However, the number of people killed in light goods vehicles more than doubled, from six in 2006 to 13 in 2007.
"The overall fall in Scottish road deaths and injuries to the lowest number since records began is welcome news," said Kathleen Braidwood, road safety officer for Scotland at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
"But we must guard against complacency, as the disappointing increase in light goods vehicle fatalities shows."
