Transport's contribution to climate change could be reduced by more than a quarter over the next 12 years, according to a new report.
But current Government policies will achieve only a 5% cut, the study concludes.
The research, commissioned by environmental group the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT), suggests measures such as funding to support more walking and cycling, improved parking controls and tax breaks for low-carbon modes of travel.
CBT claims that, by the year 2020, the report's recommendations could lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transport by 26% compared to 2006 levels.
"If the Government is serious about tackling climate change, it must do something about rising emissions from transport," said CBT executive director Stephen Joseph.
Speaking to BusinessGreen.com, CBT campaigns director Jason Torrance added: "The Government is focused on improvements to cars that will take 15 years to reach the mainstream, when there are many more effective short term measures that should be being pursued.
"Our view is that the Government is investing in the wrong areas and, contrary to popular belief, emissions cuts from transport are both achievable and cost effective."
The full report is available for download from the CBT website.
