Electric cars 'could cut greenhouse gas by 40 per cent'

29/10/2008

The introduction of electric cars could deliver a significant reduction in the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, a Government-commissioned report has found.

The report, jointly prepared by Arup and Government-funded Cenex, says that vehicles powered through electricity from the National Grid could deliver reductions of more than 40% in greenhouse gases compared to those using conventional fuels.

The study also concludes that the country has enough generating capacity "to cope with a greater uptake of electrified vehicles by 2030".

Arup says that road transport accounts for around 22% of the UK's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. On Monday, the Government claimed that its steps to encourage the more widespread uptake of electric cars would encourage a "green motoring revolution".

Neil Ridley, Arup's director of advanced technology and research, said: "Beyond the long-term reduction in greenhouse gas emissions created by switching to electric vehicles, it also makes sense to try to use the surplus capacity in the grid during off-peak times.

"Moving toward a green motoring revolution could see a real opportunity for the UK automotive industry, among other industries, to take a lead in developing more economical and efficient electric and hybrid engines."
