Government claims "green motoring revolution"

28/10/2008

Plans to encourage a mass market for electric and hybrid cars will create up to 10,000 jobs and encourage a green motoring revolution, the Government has claimed.

Speaking at a meeting to examine how to speed up the public availability of green vehicles, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon announced supporting steps the Government will be taking.

Among its initiatives is the provision of £10 million to fund ultra-low carbon and electric car demonstration projects, which the Government says will result in the provision of around 100 electric cars for public feedback.

"Electric cars and other low carbon vehicles, like plug-in hybrids, cut fuel costs and reduce harmful emissions," Mr Hoon said.

"If we can inspire more people to use them, it will help us to make a positive impact on climate change."

However, the Government's transport policies came under attack yesterday, with the publication of a book claiming that Labour's 10-year transport plan has failed to encourage people away from their cars.

"Our detailed analysis of Labour's transport policies shows that they have been a big disappointment - at best a missed opportunity," said Professor Jon Shaw, director of the University of Plymouth's Centre for Sustainable Transport.

"It's a shame because the Government came in with the right intentions but have done very little to promote meaningful change."

Commenting on the Transport Secretary's announcement, Richard George, roads and climate campaigner at the Campaign for Better Transport, told Admiral News: "Electric cars have a role to play, but ultimately we have to reduce the amount we drive, by investing in sustainable transport to give people real travel choices.

"This means better buses, cheaper trains and a real boost for walking and cycling - with a few electric cars sprinkled on top."
