Motorists convicted of speeding could soon face tougher penalties, under Government proposals for a shakeup of the road safety laws.
Under the new proposals, drivers could face losing their license after just two speeding offences.
The tougher punishments are outlined in a Department for Transport consultation due to begin at the end of October. It proposes an automatic six-point penalty for drivers who exceed an urban speed limit by 15mph, or a motorway speed limit by 25mph.
Current rules specify a minimum of three points for drivers caught speeding, but a penalty of up to six points can be applied depending on the severity of an offence. In the most serious cases, speeding can result in an automatic disqualification.
"In cases of extreme speeding only, there is a proposal to increase the penalty to six points to ensure the punishment corresponds better to the offence committed," said road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
However, motoring organisations have said that it is unfair to bring in tougher punishment for the worst cases without reducing the penalty for drivers who exceed the speed limit by a small margin.
