The verdict is in on the used car bargains of the year, and the Ford Focus is the overall winner.
Buyer's guide Whatcar? placed the popular small family car ahead of stablemates the Fiesta and Mondeo, as well as more glamorous choices from Mercedes and BMW, to win the Used Car of the Year 2008 award.
An 05 plate example with a 1.6 litre 115bhp Zetec engine can be had for around £5,200, and for that money a driver gets a car that is "great to drive, practical, reliable and cheap to run", according to Whatcar.
"The Focus is all the car you'll ever need, pure and simple. It's impossible to argue against when you see exactly how much you get for not much cash," it added.
The Focus held off the challenge of the BMW 520d SE, which impressed judges so much it almost drove off with the title, costing just over £14,000 for a three-year-old version.
In third place was the Focus' big brother, the Ford Mondeo, which Whatcar says can be bought for barely £4500 for a 05 or 55 plate 1.8 litre model.
These three cars took the honours in their individual categories, while the Ford Fiesta won the battle of the superminis and the Mercedes E class won the estate class.
In addition, the Land Rover Discovery triumphed in the 4x4 category, the Vauxhall Zafira was judged to best MPV buy, and the Nissan 350Z outgunned its rivals in the supercar class.
