'Tiredness can kill' warn the motorways signs - but they don't tell drivers that taking a nap could cause a sharp pain in the pocket.
A young woman found this out to her cost when she stopped for a nap during the long drive home to Lancashire from London.
Cruise ship worker Emma Faulkner (24) was hit with a £50 fine while she slept from midnight to around 4.30am at the Lymm Services on the M6 - just 35 miles from her home.
Unfortunately she had overstayed her welcome - a free two hours - and should have paid the flat rate of £15 for 24 hours.
Faulkner drove off without paying, but not before she had been caught on camera in the car park.
The first she knew about it was when she received the bill through the post from camera operators Parking Eye, although she is refusing to pay up, claiming she did not see the notice in the car park.
"I kept stopping because I was tired and I was thinking 'I really don't want fall asleep'," she said.
"I'm genuinely horrified - they are always on about safe driving."
Parking Eye said the signs at the service station were clear, but that they are happy to review cases where motorists feel there are extenuating circumstances.
