A major review of road signs in the UK has been launched in a bid to make roads safer and more efficient.
The review, billed by the Department for Transport (DfT) as the biggest overhaul since the 1960s, aims to modernise the UK's road sign network, helping to cut emissions and congestion by allowing traffic to flow more freely and effectively.
Other major aims include removing outdated signs and providing more up-to-date travel news, to help motorists make better choices about their route.
In addition, the review will look to improve motorists' understanding of traffic signs and signals and demonstrate how effective signing can cut accidents.
Transport minister Rosie Winterton said: "Road conditions have changed dramatically over the years - and road signs need to keep pace with that change to provide the best information possible to all road users.
"It is vital we help motorists, cyclists and pedestrians understand how to use our roads - improving road safety and helping reduce congestion and CO2 - without cluttering our streets with unnecessary signs."
The first meeting of the policy review steering group is set for next month. In a joint statement with the DfT, president of the AA Edmund King welcomed the move, pledging to consult with members to ensure a system "fit for the 21st Century".
