Household Saving Tips

We've put together some useful tips that will give you the satisfaction of saving money and knowing you're helping the environment.

Save energy

Most of the energy you use at home is consumed by heating and hot water, so:

• Make sure you have effective insulation for your boiler, pipes, walls and roof.

You can also save energy by:

• Turn off the lights
  Remember to turn off the lights when leaving a room
• Don't leave on standby
  Turn off TVs, stereos, PCs and other appliances when you're not using them, instead of leaving them on standby
• Electrical appliances
  Choosing energy-efficient appliances when you're replacing old ones
• Energy saving light bulbs
  Replace conventional light bulbs with energy saver bulbs

Save water

If you ask to have a water meter, you could save money on water rates. Other ways to save include:

• Switching from baths to showers
• Installing a dual flush toilet
• Collecting rainwater
  Use a water butt to use for watering your plants

Start recycling!

Most local authorities run recycling schemes. And as some of them are introducing charges for collecting non-recycled waste, the more you can recycle, the better - for your household budget and for the environment. For example, you could start with a compost bin for your recyclable food scraps.
