Home Security Tips

A break-in can be very upsetting and disruptive - so let's reduce the chances of it happening. These tips will help make your home more secure, and could help reduce your Buildings and Contents premiums too!

Think like a burglar!

By looking at your home as if you were trying to break in, you'll start to see potential weak spots:

• Would a burglar be able to get in without your keys?
• Could a burglar break in without being seen?
• Could they break in without making a lot of noise?

Make your home more secure
(and possibly reduce your premiums)

Doors:

• Locks
  5 lever Mortice locks to British Standard BS3621 offer improved security and are approved by most insurers
• Door condition
  Make sure all doors and frames are in good, strong condition
• Keys
  Take the keys out of locks overnight or if your home is unoccupied, and keep them in a safe, concealed place

Windows:

• Locks
  Fit locks to external windows and keep them locked, with the keys removed, when your home is unoccupied
• Window condition
  Make sure all casements and frames are in good, strong condition
• Laminated glass
  If possible, use laminated glass as it's much more difficult to break than ordinary glass

Alarms:

• Most burglars will avoid a house with an alarm
• Get an alarm fitted by a reputable company
  Have an alarm installed by a company registered with the National Security Inspectorate (NACOSS) or the Security Systems & Alarms Inspection Board
• Think about having a monitored alarm fitted
  Police might not respond to an audible-only alarm unless they've had confirmation of suspicious activity

Neighbourhood Watch

• Join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme
  If there isn't one, consider starting your own there are
