Country roads are worse than motorways for road deaths

Six times more people die in road accidents on rural roads than on motorways in the UK. Now car insurer, Admiral is asking all drivers to be aware of this statistic and take extra care on rural roads through the summer months, when more people use rural roads.

Over the last five years, there has been an average of 1,160 fatal accidents each year on roads in the country. By contrast motorways are relatively safe, in the same period there were an average of 180 fatal motorway accidents each year.

Admiral managing director, Jane Stone, said, "We want to make motorists aware of these statistics and take extra care when driving in the country this summer. Most people think motorways are the most dangerous places to drive because of the speed. These figures clearly show this isn't the case. There are often blind corners and dips on country roads, while at night there aren't any streetlights."

Although the number of serious accidents on British roads dropped from 4,700 in 1990 and 3,100 in 2000, the last two years have seen them rise again slightly. Admiral would like to see that figure drop even further. Jane Stone, said, "We hope by highlighting the danger of driving along country roads, we can make some motorists drive more carefully when out for a spin in the country this summer."
