Are dads better drivers?

Fatherhood brings life changing responsibilities and it appears that paternal instinct encourages men to drive more safely.

With Father’s Day this Sunday, research by insurance specialist Admiral has shown that fathers are 12% less likely to have an accident than men without children. Fathers are also 6% less likely to have a motoring conviction.

Admiral studied data from a quarter of a million motorists who are all dads. It found that as well as having fewer accidents than men without children, fathers are less likely to have a conviction for speeding, jumping a traffic light and driving without due care and attention.

Admiral managing director, Sue Longthorn, said: “Our research suggests men drive more carefully when they become fathers. In fact they are 50% less likely to be convicted of driving without due care or attention than men without children.

“Perhaps more surprisingly, dads tend to drive faster cars than their childless counterparts. The average engine size of fathers’ is 2.0cc, compared to 1.8cc for men without kids. Now that they have kids, maybe it’s just the size of their engine that matters!”

Fatherhood also seems to have a bearing on car colour. Dads tend to opt for more unassuming silver or blue cars and guys without children favour mysterious black and racy red. Men without children are also 48% more likely to go for a convertible car.
