Choose the 'greenest' car

Every vehicle manufacturer is developing their range to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Today's new cars are much more fuel-efficient than those of only a decade ago, and although an electric car may still be a step too far for many people, hybrids are now a practical proposition. Even conventional petrol and diesel-engined cars can now be surprisingly 'green'.

Next Green Car is an independent website that keeps up to date with the latest developments and 'green' new car launches. It regularly assesses and compares the latest models in a range of categories, from city cars and superminis to executive and sports utility.

You'll find similar information on Green-Car-Guide and Clean Green Cars. And the Government has useful advice on a variety of eco-driving issues too.

They make the interesting point that perhaps one of the greenest alternatives is a second-hand car. By far the greatest use of energy in a car's life is during its construction. So buying a second-hand car rather than a new one helps make a bigger impact on reducing global energy consumption. Of course, that's not an argument favoured by vehicle manufacturers, who will counter with the fact that new cars are more fuel-efficient and less polluting. It's your choice!
