Classic cars have a large and enthusiastic following around the world, and some of the strongest support is here in the UK.

Owning and driving an older car - whether it's a London to Brighton Run veteran or a velour upholstery '70s Capri - is no longer a minority interest. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs reckons the industry supporting the old car movement is now worth £3bn a year to the UK.

The Government's road tax duty exemption for Historic vehicles is set at 1st January 1973, but many enthusiasts think younger cars are classics too. The good news is, so do we at Admiral!

What is Agreed Valuation?

Most car insurance is based on the market value of the car. This is easy enough to define for modern cars - it's what the car would fetch if sold on the open market.

But for classic cars, it's much more complicated. Parts availability and repair techniques are likely to differ to modern cars, or if similar cars don't come up for sale very often, it can be difficult to set an average market value.

With Agreed Valuation, you supply your insurance provider with photographic proof of the car's condition (usually a minimum of three exterior shots, an interior shot and the engine bay) and copies of any documents showing the purchase price you paid, restoration bills or an estimate of your car's value by an official from your car club. If you can't get an independent estimate, you can provide your own - but please be realistic!

We'll then agree the value (or discuss it with you if necessary). Most classic car owners also have modern cars, so do limited mileage in their classics. This, and the fact that you probably drive it very carefully, means that premiums for classic car are pleasingly low. Try us and find out!
